How is Baidu SEO different from Google SEO?

The goal is familiar. The rules, the tools and the access to them are not.

The short answer

Baidu ranks on a familiar idea, how well a page meets the searcher's need, but its rules differ. It wants key content in plain text and a first screen loaded within a second, and its account rules favor mainland phone numbers. Its own products compete in results, and much published advice is unproven.

  1. StatCounter put Baidu at 49.00% of search in China in October 2026, with 60.37% on mobile and 29.65% on desktop.
  2. Baidu's 2020 manual caps a sitemap file at 10 MB, against 50 MB at Google, and index sitemaps were refused from July 2020.
  3. Baidu's 2020 landing page white paper asks for the first screen to load within 1 second.
  4. In September 2023, Baidu cut sitemap submission for accounts without real-name verification.
  5. Baidu wrote in 2017 that a site's brand matters far more than its links.

Baidu SEO won’t feel foreign if you rank on Google. Both reward useful pages that load fast. The gaps sit in the details, and they change what you should do first.

Most comparisons set one agency’s opinion against another’s. This one reads both engines’ own documents and dates each rule.

It also says where the evidence stops. It’s part of our guide on how to be visible in China.

Does Baidu deserve its own plan?

Yes. StatCounter put Baidu at 49.00% of search in China in October 2026, the largest share by far.1 The split by device matters more than that headline.

On mobile, Baidu leads clearly.2 On desktop, Bing is ahead.3 If your buyers search from an office computer, Baidu alone won’t cover them.

These shares move from month to month, so read them as a snapshot.

Our page on search engine market share in China has the detail, and Bing in China covers the second engine.

How does Baidu decide what ranks?

Baidu says results are sorted by how well they meet the user’s overall need.4 That sounds like Google, and it’s the part of your SEO that carries over. Baidu’s 2020 text names four dimensions:4

  • Content quality: the value of the page itself. Baidu calls this the most important.
  • Authority: the expertise of whoever produced it. This weighs most in medical and legal topics.
  • Browsing experience: how smoothly a user gets through the page, without clutter or ads crowding the text.
  • Timeliness: how recent the content is. This matters most for news and prices.

We found no full list of factors from Baidu, so be careful with any guide that offers one. Our page on Baidu ranking factors separates what Baidu wrote from what agencies guess.

Links are where the tone differs. Baidu wrote in 2017 that links remain the most important way to discover pages, yet that a site’s brand matters far more than its links.5

It also says links between sites on the same topic are friendlier, and asks for nofollow on advertising links.6

Its link analysis tool was withdrawn in June 2020, so you won’t get that view from Baidu.7 See backlinks for Baidu.

Baidu vs Google: the rules side by side

Several rules Google users take for granted differ on Baidu, and some are stricter. Each cell below comes from that engine’s own documentation.

TopicGoogleBaidu
Meta keywordsNot used, no effect on indexing or ranking (2025) 8Lists “page keywords” among signals, without naming the tag (2017) 5. Calls the tag a “reference” for mini programs (2019) 9
Meta descriptionSometimes used for the snippet 10Not a ranking factor, can serve as the snippet (2019) 11
JavaScriptSends pages returning 200 to a rendering queue, using headless Chromium (2026) 12Announced a render agent in beta (2017) 13. Guides still ask for text, not JS, for key content and links (2019) 11
Sitemap file limit50 MB or 50,000 URLs (2026) 1410 MB or 50,000 URLs, TXT or XML (2020) 15
Sitemap totalSplit into several files as needed 14Under 50,000 “sitemap links” per site, a term Baidu doesn’t define (2020) 15
Index sitemapsSupported (2026) 14Refused since July 2020 7
robots.txt changesCached for up to 24 hours in general 16Usually 48 hours to take effect 17

Baidu’s dates are the catch. Many of its rules were last updated between 2017 and 2020, and they may have moved since. Treat them as Baidu’s latest public word, not as a live reading.

Sitemaps are the clearest case: our submission guide weighs reports that the route has narrowed or closed.

If your site is built on a JavaScript framework, this table matters most. Read does Baidu read JavaScript? before you plan anything else.

What makes Baidu harder for a foreign site?

Three obstacles have no real Google equivalent: the account, the hosting and the language. Published evidence is thinnest on exactly these points.

The account

Baidu’s help contradicts itself. One page says accounts support only mainland China numbers.22 Another allows overseas numbers through four product lines, and says EU numbers aren’t accepted.23

A mainland number is the route described without reservation. See Baidu accounts and the Chinese phone number problem.

Verification is a second hurdle. In September 2023, Baidu cut sitemap submission for accounts without real-name verification.24

Baidu asks you to complete that step in the Baidu App.24 We couldn’t confirm that a foreign passport works there.

That same month, Baidu removed verification from risky sites. Its notice is clear that this limits platform tools, and not natural discovery, display or ranking.19

The hosting

Baidu’s last clear statement we found dates from 2017. It warned of display problems for Chinese-language sites on foreign servers, in a notice whose title mentions indexing, and advised against such servers.2526

That’s a warning, not a ban.

SEO Sherpa says Baidu tends to favor mainland servers, but that a fast site hosted outside China can still rank.27 Neither side offers recent data, so don’t trust anyone who sounds certain.

Start with does Baidu index foreign websites?

The ICP is a separate question. We found no Baidu text that makes it a ranking factor.

A 2020 Baidu guide asks site producers for “registration and filing information”, without using the word ICP.29

Reading a ranking signal into that is interpretation. The clearest ICP rule we found is about tools: a 2021 notice capped sites without an ICP at 1 sitemap file a day.7 We can’t say whether that still applies.

Whether you need an ICP at all is a legal question for a local adviser. See can you rank on Baidu without an ICP? On domains, Baidu’s 2014 guide says the suffix has no effect on web search:58 see do you need a .cn domain?

The language

We found no official Baidu text on indexing or ranking English pages. One owner of a UK-hosted site saw his English pages listed under a separate “English results” view.30

His Chinese home page only matched on its full text in late 2018, and he suspected China-hosted sites were favored.30 That’s one site, not a rule.

Agencies go further. Marketing to China says an English page won’t rank for Chinese queries, “period”. Chinafy says Baidu favors Simplified Chinese.3132

Neither shows data, but no source we read argues the opposite.

The practical answer is a dedicated Chinese version. Our localization guide explains how, and does Baidu index websites in English? covers the rest.

What changes on the results page?

A top organic spot may be worth less than on Google, because Baidu’s own products compete with you.

Ryte tracked five sectors with Dragon Metrics in 2022 and always found Baidu products in the top 3, 10 and 30.33

Their average rank ran from 9.5 to 11.8 by sector, and Baike and Tieba appeared in nearly every industry.33

The study doesn’t state its keyword volume, so treat it as an indication. A larger 2023 study of 10,000 keywords put Baidu’s own services in 34.9% of top 10 results and 60.13% of first places.56

More in Baidu Baike, Tieba and Baidu’s own results.

AI answers are the newest change. In September 2026, Baidu announced an AI traffic analysis tool showing citations, impressions and clicks.35

Its rollout is staged, and full data isn’t available yet.35 Read more on Baidu AI answers and foreign websites.

How do Baidu penalties work?

Baidu names its algorithms and describes what each one targets, often with the sanctions. The documents we read are specific, and some of them are severe.

Algorithm and dateWhat it targets
Luluo (2013) 47Buying and selling links, link brokers
Qingfeng 1.0 to 3.0 (2017 to 2018) 36Deceptive titles, misleading downloads
Hurricane 3.0 (August 2019, rules updated 2020) 28Bulk-collected content, stitched articles, content outside the site’s field
Xiyu 2.0 (rules updated 2020) 28Low-quality B2B pages, including deceptive titles
Jinglei 2.0 (May 2018, rules updated 2020) 37Links made to cheat, inflated clicks
Jinglei 3.0 (January 2021) 55Faked user behavior, quick-ranking tricks
Fenghuo 3.0 (March 2019, rules updated 2020) 37Hijacking clicks or the back button

Two of these spell out their sanctions:37

  • Jinglei 2.0: limited display, cleanup, a record in the site’s history, and a permanent ban in severe cases.
  • Fenghuo 3.0: a notice and deadline, then limits with a 1-month watch if unfixed. A second offense brings limits and a 3-month watch, and a third permanent limits.

The history record deserves attention. Cheating by a former agency could stay attached to your site.

Baidu’s B2B rules are also precise on titles. Xiyu 2.0 bans a false “official site” label, stacks of similar keywords, and odd symbols that hinder reading.28

Don’t assume this list is complete. In the latest 40 notices on Baidu’s news page, the newest algorithm name we saw is Qingfeng 4.0, listed before a notice on the 2022 World Cup. Later notices target specific sectors.48

Which common Baidu SEO claims hold up?

Many don’t have evidence behind them. We compared what we read in published guides with what Baidu has actually written.

ClaimWho says itWhat the evidence shows

Which differences should you deal with first?

Start with whatever stops Baidu or Chinese users from reaching your pages, because the rest depends on it. This order is our editorial view, not a Baidu rule.

  1. Check access. Find out whether your website is accessible in China. A blocked page can’t earn anything.
  2. Build the Chinese version. Everything else needs pages written for Chinese readers.
  3. Put content in the HTML. Don’t rely on JavaScript for body text, navigation or key links.11
  4. Fix speed and layout. Baidu asks for main content on at least 50% of the first mobile screen, and bans pop-up and floating ads.4645 See Baidu mobile SEO and how to speed up your website in China.
  5. Sort out the account. Then submit your pages, knowing that Baidu doesn’t guarantee indexing.53
  6. Work on brand and links. Build them on your topic, without buying links.

Verdict

Don’t rebuild your Google SEO on Baidu. Build a Chinese version on its own terms, and keep your Google work for Google.

The bottom line

If you remember one thing, make it this: Baidu shares Google’s goal, not its rulebook. Plain text content, speed and a Chinese version do most of the work.

Much of what’s written about Baidu is unproven or years old, and Baidu’s own rules are often dated too. Check the date before you act on any of it, including here.

The guides in this topic

Do you need a Chinese phone number to register for Baidu Webmaster Tools?

A mainland number is the safest route, and it's only the first hurdle.

9 min

Do backlinks still matter for Baidu, and where should they come from?

They do, but paid links and promotional articles are a bigger risk than most guides admit.

10 min

Do you need Baidu Baike and Tieba to be visible on Baidu?

Baidu's own products take a lot of space, but neither one is a shortcut for a foreign company.

11 min

How do you check which pages Baidu has indexed?

Two checks work without an account, one gives the reference number, and none works like Google's URL inspection.

9 min

Does Baidu index foreign websites?

Yes, it can. The harder question is why it so often doesn't, and Baidu says very little about that.

8 min

Does Baidu index websites in English?

It does, but the language of the search decides whether anyone sees them.

7 min

How long does Baidu take to index and rank a site?

Baidu gives no general number, and the ones you'll read elsewhere show no method.

9 min

How do you rank on Baidu from outside China?

Eight steps in order, built on what Baidu has actually written, with dates.

13 min

Does Baidu read JavaScript?

It has a rendering crawler, but nothing shows you can rely on it.

10 min

Which Baidu SEO tools do you need, and how do you find Chinese keywords?

Most lists name the same tools. The harder part is knowing what each number measures.

11 min

How do you optimize your site for Baidu mobile search?

Baidu's published limits, dated, plus the older advice you can now ignore.

12 min

How do you track your Baidu rankings?

There is no single Baidu rank. Each source measures something different, and that decides which number you can trust.

10 min

What are Baidu's ranking factors?

Baidu names a few, studies measure others, and most lists online are opinion.

13 min

Can you rank on Baidu without an ICP?

Yes, nothing Baidu has published stops you, but almost everything said about the effect of an ICP is opinion.

9 min

Should you start with Baidu SEO or Baidu Ads?

Start with what you can legally and practically open, then match it to your goal.

10 min

Why isn't my website showing on Baidu?

Something failed at one of four stages. Your server logs and two searches can show you which one.

13 min

Verify the site, push your URLs, then check your own quota, because the sitemap route is no longer a safe assumption.

10 min

How do you set up Baidu Webmaster Tools from outside China?

Verifying your site is the easy part. The account and identity steps are where foreign companies get stuck.

9 min

How do you use Baidu Webmaster Tools in English?

There's no English version, but the interface is manageable once you know its labels.

13 min

Common questions

Will my Google rankings help me on Baidu?

Don't count on it. Baidu runs its own crawler and index, and we found no Baidu text saying it looks at your performance on Google. Baidu's own texts point to what it can see for itself: your brand, links from sites on your topic, and how users respond to your pages.5629

Can Baidu find my site without a webmaster account?

Yes, it can. Baidu calls links the most important route for discovering pages, and its 2023 notice says that losing platform verification doesn't affect natural discovery, display or ranking.519 What you lose is visibility on your own site, because submission and the index report both sit inside the account.

How do I measure Baidu results without Google tools?

For indexed pages, use the report in Baidu's platform, since Baidu calls the site: operator an estimate.38 Baidu Tongji is the usual analytics tool, but a 2015 article calls it available to "any China website" without defining that, so test it first.39 AccuRanker and Dragon Metrics both advertise Baidu rank tracking.4041

Can I just translate my English keyword list?

It's a poor starting point, because a direct translation may not match how Chinese buyers phrase a need. Research terms in Chinese instead. A 2013 agency article treats Baidu Index mainly as a trends tool, and a 2015 article ties Baidu's Keyword Planner to a Baidu Ads account.4239 Our keyword research guide covers the options.

Does Baidu penalize AI-written content?

We found no current Baidu rule on AI content. An old, undated note lists machine-generated content as low quality, but it doesn't address today's tools.43 The Hurricane rules are a safer guide, since they target bulk-collected and stitched articles.28 Have a human check every page before it goes live.

Should I start with Baidu Ads instead of SEO?

Check whether you can open an account first. We couldn't read any official Baidu document on foreign advertisers. AppInChina says foreign companies without a local entity must use an authorized agent, while The Egg described a separate international account in 2019.4454 Confirm your case with Baidu or an authorized reseller, then compare both routes in our Baidu SEO or Ads guide.
