Can a foreign website appear in Baidu's AI answers?

Probably, but nobody has measured it, and most advice on the subject is a sales pitch.

The short answer

Possibly, but nobody has measured it. We found no Baidu rule excluding foreign sites and no data on how often they're cited. A 2026 audit saw AI answers on 82% of Chinese queries and 4% of English ones, with Baidu's own hosts most visible. Start with indexed Chinese pages, then track citations.

  1. Baidu said roughly 70% of mobile search result pages contained AI-generated content in October 2025, its latest figure we found.
  2. A June to July 2026 audit run from Milan found AI answers on 82.0% of Chinese queries and 4.0% of English ones.
  3. That audit counted 443 source hosts on Baidu against 2,843 on Google in Chinese, for a similar query set.
  4. Baidu announced an AI Traffic Analysis report in a notice dated September 15, 2026, and dashboards were still empty on September 23, per Search Engine Journal.
  5. We found no published measurement of foreign sites in Baidu's AI answers, and no Baidu figure for lost clicks.

Baidu’s results now often open with a generated answer and a list of sources. If you sell into China, the obvious question is whether your site can be one of those sources.

Vendors answer with confidence. The evidence is much thinner. This guide separates the two, as part of our work on which Chinese search engines a foreign company should target.

It covers answers inside Baidu search only. For the apps, read DeepSeek, Doubao and AI answers.

Can a foreign website appear in Baidu’s AI answers?

Nothing we found rules it out, and nothing we found measures it. That’s the honest state of the evidence on November 1, 2026.

The closest Baidu text is old and concerns regular search. Its 2014 SEO guide says it doesn’t discriminate against overseas-hosted sites, as long as they’re reachable in China.20

QuestionWhat we found
Does Baidu ban foreign sites from AI answers? No such rule found
How often are foreign sites cited? No measurement found
How does Baidu pick sources? No Baidu text found
Does a citation lift rankings?Baidu hasn’t said so 3
Do AI answers appear on English queries?Rarely, in one audit 2

GEO Compass says Baidu is weaker on Western sources unless they’re mirrored or translated.9 iClick says a Gartner or Forbes reference carries minimal weight with DeepSeek or Qwen, which aren’t Baidu.8 Neither gives data.

The closest study doesn’t settle it. Li et al. audited Baidu’s sources, but didn’t classify hosts by country.2

Verdict

Treat a citation as possible but unproven. Anyone quoting a foreign citation rate should show you the method.

How often does Baidu show an AI answer?

Often in Chinese, rarely in English. The two main figures measure different things, so don’t merge them.

SourcePeriodMeasureResult
October 2025Mobile result pages with AI-generated contentRoughly 70%
Li et al. 2June to July 2026Chinese queries with an AI overview82.0% (410 of 500)
Li et al. 2June to July 2026English queries with an AI overview4.0% (20 of 500)

Baidu doesn’t define “AI-generated content” in that sentence.1 Reports put it at 22% in January 2025, 35% in April and 64% in July.1718

We found no newer figure, and Baidu’s Q2 2026 results don’t give one.15

Topic matters too. In the audit, Health reached 97.7% and Shopping was lowest at 70.6%.2 Apart from General Knowledge, each topic held 51 queries or fewer, so read those as signals, not rates.

China’s official internet statistics body sees the change too. CNNIC says Baidu upgraded its classic results page to a 百看 page with AI summary answers.11

Regular search is shrinking but still large. CNNIC counted 782.06 million search engine users in December 2025, down from 877.82 million a year earlier.11 Start with whether Baidu indexes foreign websites.

Which sources do Baidu’s AI answers show?

Mostly Baidu’s own properties, in the two audits we read. Li et al. name baike.baidu.com, baijiahao.baidu.com and zhidao.baidu.com among the leading hosts.2 Neither audit gives a total share for Baidu-owned hosts.

Measure, June to July 2026Baidu, ChineseGoogle, ChineseGoogle, English
AI overviews collected410487484
Different source hosts4432,8432,677
Average hosts per overview15.018.616.7
Concentration (Gini, higher is tighter)0.8950.5000.462

So each answer lists plenty of sources, but they’re drawn from a much smaller pool. That is a harder door for a newcomer, even before language comes up.

Two more findings matter for your planning:

  • Google visibility doesn’t transfer. Baidu’s Chinese answers shared only 103 hosts with Google’s Chinese ones, and 25 with Google’s English ones.2
  • Independent sites can lead. In a May 2026 health audit, Zha and Chang found the most-cited Baidu domain was Bohe, an independent medical platform, ahead of Baike.5

The Bohe result covers one sector, and the paper gives no share for it. The audit ran 120 health queries, for 1,920 results across 12 countries, with Baidu queried for China only.5 It shows that a specialist outside Baidu can win. It doesn’t show that a foreign one can.

The two audits also differ on volume. Li et al. count 15 hosts per overview, while Zha and Chang report about one citation per Traditional Chinese Medicine answer on Baidu.25

Topic and collection method may explain it, so don’t assume one fixed format.

For what to do on these platforms, see Baidu Baike, Tieba and Baidu’s own results.

What do AI answers do to your clicks?

We don’t know, because Baidu hasn’t published a number that we could find. The Egg argues that users get answers on the page and click less, but offers no Baidu measurement.10

Don’t borrow Google’s figures for this. The audits above show how different the source pools are, and clicks may differ just as much.

Baidu’s finances don’t answer it either. Online marketing revenue fell 19% year over year in Q2 2026,15 and an executive said Baidu was holding back on monetizing AI search.16

Neither statement tells you what happens to a website’s clicks.

Can you measure your citations?

In principle, yes. Baidu’s Search Resource Platform announced a report called AI Traffic Analysis (AI流量分析) in a notice dated September 15, 2026.19 Search Engine Journal dates that notice to September 16.3

The notice says the rollout is phased, the data service isn’t yet active, and complete data can’t be shown.19 As of September 23, dashboards were empty.3 The link was in the manual’s navigation on November 1, 2026,12 but we can’t see behind the login.

Baidu’s notice names citations, impressions and clicks without defining them, so the definitions below rest on SEJ.193

MetricWhat it counts 3
AI citationsTimes your pages are cited in an AI answer
AI impressionsTimes users see the link to a cited page
AI clicksClicks on a cited page
AI CTRAI clicks divided by AI citations, not impressions

Two details change how you read this. AI CTR isn’t the usual click-through rate, and a page can be cited with its link unseen, so add your own clicks-per-impression column.34

The keyword and page tables are sorted by clicks and capped at 50,000 rows.3 Relevant Audience notes that cited queries with few clicks can fall low in the list.4

The report also has clear edges:

SurfaceIn the report? 3
AI answers in regular Baidu searchYes, “traditional search scenarios” 19
Standalone Baidu AI products such as WenxinDoesn’t appear so
Doubao, DeepSeek, Qwen, Quark, KimiNo

You need a verified site to see any of this. That starts with Baidu Webmaster Tools.

For a foreign company, the phone number and account step can be the real obstacle.

What can a foreign site reasonably do?

Start with work that pays off even if no AI answer ever cites you. We’ve sorted the common advice by how much evidence stands behind it.

ActionEvidence for AI answersWorth doing?
Publish real Chinese pagesIndirect: AI answers were far more common on Chinese queries 2Yes, needed for regular search too
Make sure Baidu can crawl and index themReasoning, no Baidu rule foundYes, needed anyway
Verify your site in Baidu’s platformSEJ recommends it, to have data from launch 3Yes, if you can open the account
Be present on sources Baidu showsAudits show visibility, not what it does for a brand 25Case by case
Put the answer first, name your sourcesVendor advice, no Baidu data 8Yes, it’s low cost and helps readers
Earn mentions in Chinese mediaVendor claim, no data 8Only if it serves the business anyway

Note what’s missing: no line says “this gets you cited”. That’s the point.

See how to translate your website into Chinese. If you have no Chinese pages yet, read whether Baidu indexes websites in English.

Keep checking your server logs for other AI crawlers too, because Baidu’s report won’t show them.3

Should you pay for Baidu GEO?

Not without proof. GEO, or generative engine optimization, means trying to shape what AI answers say. The offers here are the least documented part of this topic.

iClick, a self-described certified Baidu advertising partner, presents DuXingxuan (度星选) as a way to manage how brands appear in Baidu’s AI answers and on other AI platforms.6

It also sells “Baidu AI Q&A Marketing”, without saying how it works, what it costs or how results are measured.6

PingWest described the same name in 2023 as Baidu Marketing’s platform for matching advertisers with creators.7

We found no Baidu page linking it to AI answers, so the two accounts remain unreconciled.

Before paying anyone, ask for:

  • Where the content will be published, and whether it’s labeled as paid
  • A before-and-after log on your own queries, with dates
  • The method, including how many queries and from where
  • What happens to the content when you stop paying

  2. Mass-published contentRefuse

Regulators have noticed. The Cyberspace Administration of China announced a four-month campaign in April 2026, and its notice lists malicious marketing with GEO as a form of AI data poisoning.22

A Beijing district regulator also fined a GEO provider RMB 50,000 in a case reported in June 2026, partly over unsupported claims.26 Our page on DeepSeek, Doubao and AI answers covers more cases.

Separately, Xinhua announced a project for a GEO group standard in spring 2026,1425 and that standard, T/CAPT 026-2026, was released in August.27 A group standard is not a law.

How to run your own check

You can get a first picture by hand, without a tool. This tells you more about your market than any general statistic.

  1. List 20 questions. Write the ones Chinese buyers would really ask, in Simplified Chinese, with a native speaker.
  2. Search each one on Baidu. Use a clean browser, and note whether an AI answer appears.
  3. Copy the source list. Record each host, including Baidu properties and competitors.
  4. Look for your name. Note any mention of your brand or site, even without a link.
  5. Sort the sources by type. Baidu properties, media, specialists, brands, and any foreign sites.
  6. Repeat each month. Keep the same queries and method, then compare.

Results shift with time, location and browser state, as the audit’s authors warn.2

A check from outside China is a sample, not what a mainland user sees. Compare trends, and don’t over-read one search.

The bottom line

A foreign site may well be cited in Baidu’s AI answers, but nobody has published how often. Baidu’s own properties lead the source lists, though one independent specialist topped a health audit.

So build indexed Chinese pages first, verify your site if you can, and keep your own log. Don’t pay for promised citations.

How Index in China can help

We translate your site into Simplified Chinese with a human reviewer, handle its submission to Chinese search engines where the account allows it, and send a monthly report on Chinese traffic.

Common questions

Does a citation in a Baidu AI answer improve my rankings?

Nothing shows that it does. Some Chinese articles say citations raise a site's weight, but Search Engine Journal reports that Baidu hasn't said this.3 The reverse is also unproven: we found no Baidu text saying a high ranking earns a citation. Treat citations as a visibility signal of their own, not as a ranking lever.

Can I stop Baidu's AI from using my content?

We found no Baidu control aimed only at AI answers. Its robots manual describes Disallow rules for spiders and doesn't mention AI answers.12 Blocking Baiduspider would be a crude fix, since those rules also govern crawling for normal search. Most companies reading this want the opposite, so weigh that cost first.

What can I do if a Baidu AI answer gets my company wrong?

Chinese press report that the thumbs-down button on a Baidu AI answer opens a feedback page with a reporting entry.24 Check the sources shown with the answer, correct what you control and contact the other publishers. In one case, Nanjing courts ordered Baidu to apologize for a false AI answer about a lawyer, after repeated complaints failed.2324 For a serious claim, speak to a local adviser.

Do I need an ICP to be cited in Baidu's AI answers?

We found no evidence either way. GEO Compass says an ICP improves indexing and trust, without giving data.9 An ICP relates to mainland hosting, and Baidu's 2014 guide says overseas-hosted sites aren't treated worse if they're reachable in China.20 See ranking on Baidu without an ICP. The same uncertainty applies here until someone measures it.

Will Baidu put ads inside AI answers?

Baidu hasn't given a timetable that we could find. On its August 2026 earnings call, an executive said Baidu was deliberately holding back on monetizing AI search and putting product experience first.16 CNNIC wrote in early 2026 that the industry hadn't yet found the right way to place ads in search results.11 Those are current positions, not commitments, so reassess when Baidu next reports.
