Does Bing work in China, and should your plan include it?

It connects in the latest tests and it's big enough to matter, but we found no published proof for foreign sites.

The short answer

Yes in the latest tests, but on thin evidence. Bing connected, and StatCounter ranks it second overall and first on desktop in October 2026. Add it next to Baidu, because the same Chinese pages serve both. We found no published proof that foreign-hosted pages reach cn.bing.com, so test from the mainland.

  1. StatCounter put Bing at 21.69% of measured search referrals in China across all devices in October 2026, behind Baidu at 49.00%.
  2. On desktop, Bing led at 46.01% in October 2026. On mobile, it had 7.20%.
  3. GreatFire's one recent conclusive test of cn.bing.com, on October 6, 2026, connected normally.
  4. Microsoft's ranking page, updated in March 2025, names where a page is hosted among its location signals.
  5. The IndexNow FAQ, read on November 1, 2026, lists Bing but not Baidu, 360 or Sogou.

If your China plan stops at Baidu, it skips the engine StatCounter ranks second. Bing’s tools are also ones your team may already know.

The catch is that the market numbers look solid while the evidence for foreign sites is thin. This page shows you both.

It’s part of our guide to which Chinese search engines a foreign company should target.

Does Bing work in China?

Yes in the latest tests, but on thin evidence, because there are few of them. GreatFire’s tests of Bing’s main addresses connected normally.

Access has failed before. Bing went down in China in January 2019, and Microsoft then said service was restored.11

Results can differ too. Microsoft says it removes results where local law requires it, in limited cases. Its page doesn’t name China.12

How big is Bing in China?

It’s second overall and first on desktop in StatCounter’s October 2026 data. On mobile, it’s small.

StatCounter, Oct. 2026

Almost all of that is the China site. By host, cn.bing.com took 20.77% in October 2026, against 0.92% for bing.com.4

The share moves a lot, so don’t plan around a single month:

  • 12-month range: 14.2% to 23.3% across all devices, November 2025 to October 2026.1
  • Peak: 37.7% in December 2024.1
  • Desktop lead: Bing retook the lead in March 2026 and stayed ahead through October. Baidu led from November 2025 to February 2026, and Bing had led in the first half of 2025.2

In December 2025, CNNIC counted 1.121 billion of China’s 1.125 billion internet users on mobile.7 So StatCounter’s sample may lean toward desktop. That’s our reading, not a measured fact.

Our page on search engine market share in China covers every engine and the method.

Who uses Bing in China?

The best available answer comes from an agency that sells China ad services, so read it as a pitch with data behind it.

  • Location: The Egg, citing GWI data for Q2 2024 to Q1 2025, says users are highly concentrated in top-tier cities.13
  • Income: Citing iResearch from December 2024, with 1,000 respondents, it says they’re 45% more likely than the average internet user to have a household income of RMB 20,000 or more a month.13
  • Sectors: It names technology, B2B, SaaS, higher education, finance, luxury and premium cars as the best fits.13

In 2023, The Egg also claimed that B2B keywords are easier to rank for on Bing than on Baidu, and that Bing indexes new pages faster.14 It gave no data for either claim, so treat them as untested.

Our own inference is simpler. If your buyer researches at a work computer, the desktop numbers apply to you. If your buyer is a consumer on a phone, Baidu’s mobile lead matters more.

What does Bing use to rank pages?

Microsoft publishes its signals, in general order of importance.12 Two of them touch a foreign site directly: location and page load time.

SignalWhat Microsoft looks atFor a foreign site
RelevanceHow well the page matches the intentChinese pages for Chinese queries
Quality and credibilityClear purpose, reputation, authorityName a real company and real contacts
User engagementClicks, time spent, quick returnsPages that load and answer
FreshnessGenerally prefers current contentKeep dated facts up to date
LocationUser’s country and city, where the page is hosted, its language, visitor locationsWhere you host is a named input, with no stated penalty for abroad
Page load timeSlow pages count as a poor experienceThe border makes this harder

Microsoft publishes no weights. So this doesn’t mean a site hosted abroad can’t rank, and it doesn’t mean hosting abroad is harmless.

The practical answer is the same as elsewhere: speed up your site in China, and look at Hong Kong or mainland hosting before you pay for anything.

What we couldn’t find proof of

We found no published evidence on the question you probably care about most. No page we read tests a foreign-hosted site on cn.bing.com.

  • Same index? We found no Microsoft statement that settles whether cn.bing.com and bing.com share one. In 2017, Microsoft launched an international version in China for English searches, and said it supports cross-language search in the domestic version.30 In 2014, GreatFire tested “International Bing” and “China Bing” as two services.16 Both are old.
  • Does hosting in China help? Microsoft gives no weight for hosting location.12 In a 2014 post on censorship, GreatFire suggested Bing’s Chinese ranking “might” favor sites hosted in China. It offered that as a hypothesis, and it didn’t measure hosting.16
  • Does submitting reach China? The Egg presents Bing Webmaster Tools as a way to improve SEO on CN Bing, but in 2023, and without covering foreign sites.15
  • Does IndexNow reach it? We found nothing that says so, or that it doesn’t.
  • Is an ICP needed? The ICP rule follows mainland hosting. We found no source on whether Bing treats a site without one differently.

None of this means it doesn’t work. It means you should test it instead of trusting a confident guide, including this one.

How to set up your site for Bing

Five steps cover the basics, and most of the work is shared with other engines. Submitting doesn’t guarantee indexing.24

Fig. 3Setting up for Bing
  1. Chinese pages
  2. Language signals
  3. Verified site
  4. Sitemap
  5. IndexNow
  6. Test from China
  1. Publish real Chinese pages. Page language is a named signal.12 Start with how to translate your website into Chinese.
  2. Declare the language. Use hreflang, as Bing’s December 2025 post recommends.17 Keep your lang attribute consistent, as zh-CN.
  3. Verify your site. Import it from Google Search Console, or use an XML file, a meta tag or a CNAME record.2021
  4. Submit your sitemap. A Search Console import brings sitemaps along.20 Bing says it typically revisits a sitemap at least once a day.22
  5. Turn on IndexNow. Host a key file at your site’s root, then send URLs through the API or a plugin such as Yoast or Rank Math.23 Bing recommends it for real-time URL submission.22 It’s a cheap step for your global site, but we couldn’t confirm it reaches cn.bing.com.

Advice on Bing’s language signals isn’t settled:

SourceWhat it says
Use hreflang for language and regional targeting 17
Ahrefs, updated March 2025Bing calls hreflang a weak signal, and leans on content-language, links and visitors 18
Content-language meta tag first, then lang, then header, domain and IP 19

The 2011 post is old. Its IP signal does seem to fit Microsoft’s current mention of where a page is hosted, but that’s our reading.

How to check you’re on Bing China

Check from the mainland, without a VPN. Nothing else answers the question. Our guide to testing your site from China explains the options.

  1. Open cn.bing.com in China. Ask a colleague or partner there.
  2. Search site:yourdomain.com. Microsoft documents site:, language: and loc:,25 without saying whether they behave the same on cn.bing.com. Add a Chinese word to narrow it down.
  3. Search your real Chinese queries. Look for your page, not only your domain.
  4. Save a dated screenshot. It’s your baseline for the next check.

The Egg says keyword research in Bing Webmaster Tools can filter impressions by country, language and device.15

We couldn’t confirm how that maps to cn.bing.com, so use it alongside the live check.

Should Bing come before or after Baidu?

Alongside it, not instead of it. The same Chinese pages serve both, so adding Bing is a small extra step once they exist. On ads, Charlesworth also calls Bing a supplementary option for companies already advertising on Baidu.27

Verdict

If your buyers are consumers on phones, finish Baidu first and treat Bing as a quick add-on. If they’re professionals at a desk, give Bing equal attention from the start.

Can you run Bing ads in China?

Yes for marketers in China, where Microsoft works with a partner. For foreign advertisers, the rules aren’t clear from anything we could read.

Microsoft says InMobi assists with sales, account management and billing for Mainland China customers, effective June 2023.28

Elite Asia and Charlesworth date the launch of search ads in China to 2024.2729 We can’t tell whether that’s the same event.

The Egg says running them from overseas is technically possible. It also says local entity registration, an ICP filing for China-hosted landing pages, and accepted payment methods can all cause delays.13

It cites no Microsoft rule for that, and it sells this service.

Ask Microsoft or InMobi directly, and take legal questions to a local adviser.

Our guides to search engine marketing in China and advertising in China cover the wider picture.

The bottom line

Bing is reachable in the latest tests, it’s second in StatCounter’s data, and it’s a small step once your Chinese pages exist. So add it.

Just don’t take anyone’s word for what happens next, because we found no published proof for foreign-hosted sites. Test from the mainland, and keep your screenshots.

Common questions

Is Bing in China the same as global Bing?

Don't assume so. Bing's China traffic runs through its own address, cn.bing.com, and Microsoft says it weighs the user's location when ranking.12 We found no Microsoft statement that settles whether the two share one index. A result you see from abroad tells you little about what a searcher in Shanghai sees.

Can I pay to rank higher on Bing in China?

Not in the organic results. Microsoft says Bing doesn't let websites improve their organic positions through payment, and it labels paid ads.12 Be careful with anyone selling guaranteed Bing positions. Ads are a separate channel with their own rules, so judge them on their own costs and approval process.

Do I need a Chinese phone number for Bing Webmaster Tools?

We found no source that says so. The Egg's 2023 walkthrough describes signing up with a Microsoft, Google or Facebook account and mentions no phone step.15 That page is more than three years old and doesn't address foreign sites, so check the current signup screen before you build your plan around it.

Does Bing show AI answers in China?

The Egg says Bing announced AI question-and-answer features for its China results in March 2024, though it links no announcement.26 We found no measure of how often they appear there, or of how they affect clicks to websites. Our guide to AI answers covers what's better documented on Chinese platforms.

Can English pages rank on Bing in China?

We found no published test either way. Microsoft lists page language among its location signals,12 and Bing has a language filter,25 so English pages are at least identifiable as English. If your buyers search in Chinese, you need Chinese pages. English pages would mostly compete for searches made in English.
