Baidu, WeChat or Xiaohongshu: which channel should you start with?
No study we found settles it, so decide on who your buyer is, what you can open, and who will answer.
The short answer
Start with WeChat if you already have Chinese contacts. Start with a Chinese page Baidu can index if buyers already search for what you sell, since it needs no account approval. Start with Xiaohongshu for researched consumer products. We found no neutral study ranking the three, so choose by buyer, access and staffing.
- Xiaohongshu rules that took effect on March 12, 2025 ban links and QR codes for other platforms outside its official tools, Chinese press reported.
- Weixin and WeChat had 1,439 million monthly users on June 30, 2026, a worldwide figure that doesn't show who will find you.
- Xiaohongshu claimed over 400 million monthly users in May 2026, while QuestMobile counted 245 million in March 2026.
- CNNIC counted 782.06 million search engine users in December 2025, down from 877.82 million a year earlier.
- One agency's July 2026 guide prices Xiaohongshu seeding at 30,000 to 50,000 RMB a month, and a lean WeChat account with a simple Mini-Program store at 50,000 to 80,000 RMB a year.
Most agency guides push a channel they sell. So do we: we sell Chinese search visibility, so read our answer with that in mind.
The channels aren’t really rivals, because each does a different job. The useful question is which job comes first.
This guide is part of our work on how to find Chinese customers.
It covers mainland China. If your buyers live abroad, start with mainland China or the diaspora.
Which channel should you start with?
Run three tests in order, and stop at the first yes. This is our reasoning, not a measured result: no study we found compares the three channels on leads or sales.
| Test | If yes, start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Do you already have Chinese clients, partners or leads? | You have people to bring there, and it’s built for staying in touch | |
| Do buyers search for what you sell by name or need? | A Chinese page on Baidu | You catch existing demand, and no platform has to approve you |
| Do consumers research your product before buying? | Xiaohongshu | Buyers look there for other people’s experience |
| None of these | Neither, yet | Check for demand before you open anything |
B2B services often fit the second test. HI-COM puts beauty and fashion in the third.9
Then check who will do the work. WeChat and Xiaohongshu both expect someone to reply in Chinese.
If nobody can, read how to answer Chinese enquiries before you open an account.
Verdict
With no contacts or Chinese-speaking staff, start with a page Baidu can index. You need no account approval, and nobody has to post every week. Baidu still decides whether to index and rank it.
What each channel actually does
Baidu catches people who are already looking, Xiaohongshu puts you in front of people comparing options, and WeChat keeps people you’ve already met.
| Baidu | Xiaohongshu | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Job | Answer a search | Discovery and reviews | Follow-up and relationship |
| How strangers reach you | Search results | In-app search and feed | Rarely, unless you run ads |
| What you build | Pages on your own domain | Notes on their platform | Followers on their platform |
| Ongoing work | Lower once pages are live | Regular notes and replies | Articles and conversations |
| Weak spot | Slow to build | Consumer-led, strict on outbound contact | Needs an audience from elsewhere |
Two agencies we read flag WeChat’s limit. HI-COM said in 2024 that content struggles to reach new users without ads.10
Marketing to China says it’s “not where you find new customers cheaply anymore.”6
That’s why WeChat is a strong first channel only when you already have people to invite. Its search won’t fill the gap, as our guide to WeChat search explains.
Xiaohongshu’s COO said in December 2023 that nearly 70% of monthly users search, and that a third of monthly users go straight to search when they open the app.26 A December 2024 report cites similar official data.7
Those are the platform’s own numbers, but they do point to a real search habit.
What can you open without a Chinese company?
Baidu’s organic results need no account or approval, only a page it can crawl. The other routes depend on approvals that sources describe differently, so check them before you plan.
| Route | Without a Chinese entity | What sources say |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | No ICP needed to rank, says Chinafy, but slow sites may not rank at all 15 | |
| Through an agent | AppInChina says a Baidu-authorized local agent, and a mainland-hosted page 21 | |
| WeChat Service Account | Disputed | AppInChina says yes, for overseas enterprises 16; SSW says a Chinese license or WFOE 17 |
| Xiaohongshu Professional Account | Reported possible | AppInChina describes direct registration, with a CNY 600 yearly fee 18 |
| Xiaohongshu ads | Through a partner | AppInChina says Juguang needs a Chinese entity 19 |
AppInChina also notes that overseas WeChat accounts may have different access to payments and advanced functions.16
The Xiaohongshu file is heavier than it looks. AppInChina lists a certified license translation, a trademark certificate, a manager’s passport, a signed letter and a Chinese phone number.18
Dragon Trail said in 2024 that verification takes no more than a month.20
If you want paid search, Baidu SEO or Baidu Ads covers that choice, and how to advertise in China covers the rest.
Why the Xiaohongshu to WeChat funnel isn’t simple
Many guides tell you to find people on Xiaohongshu and convert them on WeChat. Xiaohongshu’s reported rules limit how you can make that link, and none of the guides we read mention it.
Chinese press described two rule changes in early 2025:
- January 7, 2025: Professional account auto-replies and welcome messages can’t include WeChat contacts or a phone number, Jiemian reported. Its social card became the only allowed route.23
- March 12, 2025: Steering users off the platform is banned outside the mall, the live shopping cart and the official lead component. All users are covered, and so are other platforms’ links, QR codes and accounts.22
Our Xiaohongshu guide lists what’s barred and the penalties.
The March report calls these trade diversion rules, but its definition also covers promotion and sending users to private channels. It doesn’t mention service leads, so the edges are unclear.
These reports date from 2025, and we haven’t read the official text. Check the current rules before you plan around them.
HI-COM describes a softer version, where interested users search for your WeChat account themselves.9
That only works if they can find you, and naming your WeChat account in a note may itself break the reported rules. So use the same Chinese brand name everywhere, and see how to choose one.
Why audience numbers won’t settle this
Audience size can’t pick your channel, because these figures measure different things and some are disputed. They tell you each channel is large enough, and little more.
| Measure | Figure | Source and date | Read it as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weixin and WeChat combined | 1,439 M monthly users | Tencent, June 2026 1 | Worldwide, not China only |
| Search engine users | 782.06 M, down from 877.82 M | CNNIC, Dec. 2025 2 | CNNIC links the fall partly to AI search products, without a number |
| 644 M monthly users | Baidu, June 2026 3 | App only, not all Baidu search | |
| Xiaohongshu | 245 M monthly users | QuestMobile via 36Kr, March 2026 5 | Third-party monitoring data |
| Xiaohongshu | 350 M monthly users | Marketing to China, citing Qiangua, mid-2026 6 | Agency citing a data firm |
| Xiaohongshu | Over 400 M monthly users | Xiaohongshu report via Beijing Business Today, May 2026 25 | The company’s own claim |
Treat Xiaohongshu’s size as a range, not a number. Nothing we read reconciles these figures.
Search share has the same blind spot. StatCounter put Baidu at 49.00% and Bing at 21.69% in October 2026.4 It tracks web search engines, so searches inside Xiaohongshu or WeChat don’t count.
Xiaohongshu’s own May 2026 report claimed 800 million daily searches.25 A Chinese report put the count near 600 million in late 2024, citing Zhoutian Finance rather than the company.7 Neither is comparable to StatCounter’s share.
The one channel survey we read is narrow too. Hurun asked 470 wealthy Chinese in 2026: 61% named Xiaohongshu as an information source, 48% Douyin and 32% WeChat.8
That’s luxury buyers, so don’t apply it to your market.

What agencies recommend, and where they disagree
The agencies we read don’t agree, and none shows data comparing the channels. Each position below is an opinion from a firm selling these services, and so is ours.
| Who | Position | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing to China, B2B, July 2026 | Checklist runs website, Baidu, then WeChat 11 | Same article says buyers ask AI assistants before Baidu, and that Baidu still comes first, without data 11 |
| Marketing to China, social, July 2026 | Social budget from zero: 40% WeChat, 25% Xiaohongshu, 25% Douyin, 10% Weibo 6 | Calls WeChat a retention channel, gives it the largest share, and leaves search out of scope |
| HI-COM, March 2026 | Beauty and fashion start on RED, B2B and finance on WeChat 9 | In 2024 it framed WeChat as a tool for existing clients 10 |
| Horsten, undated | WeChat over Baidu for foreign B2B 12 | No external sources, and it says Chinese readers won’t find a foreign site |
| iClick, June 2026 | A connected mix, with no first channel 13 | Doesn’t help a team that can only do one |
Horsten’s case deserves a fair hearing. Chinafy agrees that slow sites can miss Baidu altogether,15 and our ICP guide covers the barrier.
But an Official Account has the same difficulty in reverse: nobody finds it without being sent there.
Our own answer has a limit too. A Chinese page brings no guarantee of traffic, and Baidu accounts can be awkward to set up from abroad.
What each first move costs
We’d expect staff time to be the main cost, and published prices are thin. The figures below come from one agency’s July 2026 guide, so read them as a seller’s estimates, not market rates.
| First move | Published figure | Ongoing need |
|---|---|---|
| WeChat, lean Official Account plus simple Mini-Program store | 50,000 to 80,000 RMB a year 6 | Regular articles and replies |
| Xiaohongshu seeding, 20 to 30 creator notes | 30,000 to 50,000 RMB a month 6 | Creators, notes, comment replies |
| Chinese pages for Baidu | No comparable figure found | Translation, then upkeep |
Seeding usually means paying creators, and paid content has rules of its own. China’s Advertising Law requires ads to be identifiable and bans terms like “best”.24
How that applies to a foreign company is a question for a local adviser. Our page on banned advertising words has the detail.

A sequence you can follow
This order suits a company with no entity and no contacts in China. It keeps your early spending in things you own, and adds a platform only when someone can run it.
- Choose your Chinese name. Check the trademark too. AppInChina notes that squatting is common, and the mark is on Xiaohongshu’s document list.18
- Publish your core pages in Chinese. Start small, with the pages to translate first.
- Test them from China. Make sure your site is accessible and your contact form works.
- Put your contact route on the site. Say who answers, in which language, and how to reach them.
- Add one social channel. Pick WeChat once leads arrive, or Xiaohongshu if consumers are your buyers.
- 1Chinese name
- 2Core pages in Chinese
- 3Test from China
- 4Contact route
- 5One social channelCheckpoint before this last step: someone replies in Chinese.
Check whether you own what you’re building. Pages on your domain stay yours, while a note or a follower list depends on a platform’s rules.
B2B companies should also read B2B marketing in China, since trade shows may matter as much as these three.
And how Chinese buyers search helps with the second test.
The bottom line
If you remember one thing: pick the job first, not the platform. WeChat is for people you already know, Baidu is for people already looking, and Xiaohongshu is for consumers comparing options.
If you have no contacts and no Chinese-speaking staff, start with pages you own. But that’s a judgment, not a proven result, and your own market may say otherwise.
How Index in China can help
We translate your website into Simplified Chinese with a human reviewer, work on getting it indexed on Chinese search engines and send a monthly report on Chinese traffic. We don’t guarantee traffic.
That’s search work: our offer doesn’t list running a WeChat or Xiaohongshu account, so if your tests point there, check that with us first.

Which channel suits B2B?
The tests above usually point B2B services to Baidu, which is our reasoning, not a measured result. iClick wrote in August 2026 that procurement teams use Xiaohongshu to check vendors, but gave no survey or sample.14 See B2B marketing in China for trade shows and outreach, and our Xiaohongshu guide for what's known there.
Where does Douyin fit? Should I start there instead?
Marketing to China sees Douyin as a sales channel for visual products with enough margin for content and paid boosting. It says a quarter-long test starts around 80,000 to 150,000 RMB.6 It also says Douyin shop checkout generally needs a local entity or licensed partner.6 The cross-border route in our digital marketing guide needs a mainland company too. That makes it a poor first test for most small foreign companies.
Should I run two channels at once?
Only if a different person can keep each one going in Chinese. Every channel has its own format, inbox and rules, so splitting one person's week across two usually means both look half-finished. If you have the staff, Baidu and one social channel can sit together, since published pages don't need daily posting.
Does AI search change the order?
It may, but no source we read shows how much. Marketing to China says first supplier shortlists often come from AI assistants, and gives no data.11 CNNIC reports 602 million generative AI users in December 2025.2 Answers still draw on published content, so public Chinese pages stay useful. Our AI search guide has the detail.
