Can WeChat search show your website?
Sometimes it has, but we found no published way to make it happen.
The short answer
Possibly, but you can't control it. WeChat search has shown web results, placed after its own content in 2020 reports, and we found no way to submit a site. Test your brand from China, treat any web listing as a bonus, and use an Official Account if you want to be found inside WeChat.
- In September 2020, 36Kr reported that WeChat search placed its own content first, then web results.
- WeChat's Mini Program guide says: we don't index anything inside a web-view (undated, read November 1, 2026).
- In July 2025, Tencent said WeChat AI search uses only Official Accounts and other public internet information.
- sspai's August 2021 list of 15 WeChat search categories doesn't include web pages.
- Tencent announced 800 million monthly search users for 2022 in March 2023. We found nothing newer.
You keep hearing that you need WeChat, and your site already exists. So the obvious question is whether one can feed the other.
The WeChat SEO guides we read skip it and go straight to Official Accounts. This page sticks to your website.
It’s part of our guide to which Chinese search engines a foreign company should target.
Can WeChat search show an ordinary website?
It has, in some of the reports we could find, but always behind WeChat’s own content. Nothing we read confirms what happens in 2026.
| Date | Source | What it says about the web |
|---|---|---|
| May 2017 | WalktheChat | Search “simply lists the content accessible within WeChat” 5 |
| March 2019 | ifanr | Official Account content and web search options sit low on the page 3 |
| Sept. 2020 | 36Kr | Moments, articles and Channels first, web results after 1 |
| Sept. 2020 | The Egg | “Latest news on web” comes last of six content types 2 |
| Aug. 2021 | sspai | Lists 15 categories, and web pages aren’t one 4 |
36Kr quoted a WeChat product operations director saying that search was gradually supporting outside content.1 We found no later statement on how far that went.
So the fair reading is that web results exist or have existed, and you shouldn’t build on them.
Verdict
Treat a web listing in WeChat search as a bonus you can’t plan for.
Can you submit your website to WeChat search?
Not that we could find. We searched in English and Chinese for a webmaster tool, a site verification step or a sitemap route for ordinary websites, and found none.
That isn’t proof that none exists. But WeChat documents Mini Program search in detail, so the silence on websites is telling.
Be careful with these three look-alikes:
| What it is | Direction | Does it put your site in WeChat? |
|---|---|---|
| Lets you search WeChat accounts and articles on a website 8 | No, it reads WeChat from outside | |
| Sends page links to Sogou, with no guarantee of indexing 9 | Nothing we read says so | |
| Mini Program sitemap | Controls which Mini Program pages get indexed 29 | No, Mini Programs only |
Tencent owns Sogou, so it’s tempting to think that a Sogou listing flows into WeChat. We found no evidence for that. Index your site on Sogou for its own sake, if at all.
Would a Mini Program get your site in?
Not if you simply wrap your website in one. WeChat’s guide is blunt about it: “我们不收录 web-view 中的任何内容”, meaning we don’t index anything inside a web-view.7
It adds that this isn’t possible for now, and may not be in the long term.7 That rules out the shortcut most people think of first.
A web-view may also need more than you have. One Alibaba Cloud guide lists an ICP-filed domain and a non-personal Mini Program as prerequisites.25
Check that against your own setup, since an ICP depends on mainland hosting.
A real Mini Program can be searched, if built to WeChat’s rules:7
- Crawler: It identifies itself as
mpcrawler, and finds pages through internal links. - Direct opening: Each result URL must open on its own, without depending on earlier context.
- Login: Ask for login or a phone number only when it’s truly needed.
Does WeChat’s AI search read your website?
Tencent says its sources include the wider web, but we can’t say whether that reaches your site. One agency says the opposite, and we found no measurement.
| Date | Who | Statement |
|---|---|---|
| Oct. 2024 | 36Kr | WeChat’s AI answers draw mostly on Official Account content 12 |
| Feb. 2025 | The Paper | WeChat tests DeepSeek-R1 with some users 13 |
| Feb. 2025 | Tencent, via Southern Metropolis Daily | Sources include WeChat content and quality content from across the web 11 |
| July 2025 | Tencent, via Southern Metropolis Daily | AI search uses only Official Accounts and other public internet information 11 |
| Sept. 2025 | The Paper | AI search moves up to the search box, still in staged testing 14 |
| Undated | IT Consultis | AI answers “draw from both web sources and Official Account content” 16 |
| Updated Sept. 2026 | Marketing to China | “Your external website” counts for nothing in AI search 6 |
Tencent’s wording includes the open web, without saying which sites. Marketing to China flatly rules them out, but gives no test for that claim. The client tests it describes cover content published inside WeChat.6
Yuanbao, Tencent’s separate assistant, is a related case. At its May 2024 launch, IT Home reported that it plugged into WeChat search and Sogou search.10
Its coverage was described as WeChat content plus authoritative internet sources.10
How to test your own site in WeChat search
You can check this yourself, with one contact in mainland China. That’s the view your buyers get, and you won’t need to rely on a vendor’s word.
- Pick two searches. Use your Chinese brand name, plus one exact sentence from your Chinese pages.
- Ask your contact to run them. They use the search bar at the top of WeChat, not a browser.
- Open every tab. Ask for screenshots of the full results, down to the bottom.
- Look for your domain. Note whether your site appears directly, or only through someone’s article.
- Repeat with a second person. Results can include friends’ content, so one account isn’t enough.3
Run the same two searches on Baidu to compare. If your pages aren’t showing up there either, start with why your site isn’t showing on Baidu.

What do guides mean by WeChat SEO?
They mean ranking an Official Account, not a website. Tencent hasn’t published ranking criteria that we could find, so this is an agency’s view. IT Consultis names:16
- Thematic clarity: A consistent subject across the account.
- Keywords and intent: Long-tail terms, matched to what the searcher wants.
- Article structure: Precise titles, logical headings, readable formatting.
None of that touches your site. Our WeChat guide covers the account side.
What actually connects WeChat to your site
Links do, more than search. People reach your site from WeChat by clicking, so your job is to place those links and make sure the page opens.
- Official Account articles: One 2024 account says body links can only point inside WeChat, and uses “Read the original” for anything else.15
- One-to-one chats: WeChat opened outside links here in 2021, directly and without restriction.2627
- Group chats: Only e-commerce links were on trial for direct opening, as of November 2021.27 We found no later update.
WeChat can still act against a link. Its 2019 rules allow it to stop a link spreading, block a domain or IP, and permanently ban them in serious cases.28
Those rules target things like deceptive redirects, spam and paid votes. Keep your page clean, and don’t rely on tricks to get it shared.

Then check the destination. A link is useless if the page stalls, so test your site from China before you share it.
So what should you do?
Match the channel to your goal. Your website and WeChat do different jobs, and search on one won’t do the work of the other.
| Your goal | What to do |
|---|---|
| Be found by people searching in China | Work on Baidu and the other web engines first |
| Be found inside WeChat | Publish through an Official Account |
| Choose where to start | Read which channel comes first |
| Keep existing contacts close | Use WeChat, and link back to your site |
The bottom line
If you remember one thing: we found no published way to steer your website into WeChat search.
WeChat search has shown the web, but at the bottom, and we can’t say how it works today. Run the test, then put your effort where you have some control.
How Index in China can help
We translate your website into Simplified Chinese with a human reviewer, work on getting it indexed on Chinese search engines and send a monthly report on Chinese traffic.
We don’t promise a place in WeChat search, because we know of no way to request one. See what we do, or book a 30-minute call.

Do WeChat articles show up on Google or Baidu?
It has changed over time. In October 2021, Reuters reported that WeChat content had opened to outside engines such as Google and Bing, but its own checks found it wasn't searchable on Baidu.20 We found nothing newer, so run a quick search on your own articles rather than assume either way.
Is WeChat search the same as Sogou WeChat search?
No. WeChat search lives inside the app. Sogou's version is a separate website that searches accounts and articles from the outside.8 It doesn't look at your website. Sogou's regular web search is a different product again, so a listing on one of the three tells you nothing about the others.
Do backlinks help in WeChat search?
Less than on Baidu or Google, according to IT Consultis, which calls WeChat a more closed environment.16 That's an agency's view, not a Tencent statement, and we found no published ranking criteria. Links to your site are still useful for Baidu and Bing, so keep building them for those engines.
How many people use WeChat search?
Tencent announced over 700 million monthly users in January 2022,17 and 800 million for 2022 in March 2023.18 Those are company figures reported by the press, and we found nothing newer. WeChat as a whole had 1,439 million monthly users in June 2026,19 which is accounts worldwide, not searchers.
Can I pay to appear in WeChat search?
AppInChina, which sells this service, lists search ads as a WeChat placement. It says overseas companies can advertise through a verified overseas account or an authorized partner, but a company website isn't automatically an approved ad destination.21 A Brand Zone at the top of results existed in 2021.22 Confirm current terms with Tencent or an authorized agency.
Can a foreign company open an Official Account?
Guides disagree. AppInChina says entities outside mainland China can open only an enterprise Service Account.23 SSW, in June 2024, says you need a Chinese license or a WFOE.24 We couldn't read an official Tencent page on this. Check the current rules before you plan around it, and see our WeChat guide.
