Sogou SEO: is it worth the effort, and what can a foreign site actually do?

Most Sogou guides recycle the same few lines about authority and title tags. Of those we read, only a 2019 walkthrough points to Sogou’s platform, and none works through its rules, even though they’re online and specific.

Is Sogou still worth your time?

Yes, as a light extension of your Baidu work. No, as a project of its own. It’s alive, it’s small, and its published rules ask for little beyond crawlable pages and original text.

StatCounter

StatCounter counts clicks through to websites, not searches.² Its FAQ says nothing about search inside apps, so read these as measured clicks, not as Sogou’s whole audience.

You’ll still see Sogou called China’s second engine. Chinafy’s 2023 guide gives 18.4%, using a 2020 Statista figure.¹⁸ That number is too old to plan on.

You may also read that Sogou shut down in 2023. Its webmaster platform is online, and sogou.com still serves search.⁵²⁷

What can a foreign site do without an ICP?

It can open itself to the crawler and verify ownership. Full platform access is a different matter, because Sogou’s forms assume a Chinese site and a Chinese entity.

The owner step comes from the help page. It lists ICP filing under site information, and a unified social credit code under entity information. The operator gives a name, ID card and contact details.⁶

It marks nothing as optional and doesn’t mention foreign applicants. Sogou says staff review the submission within 7 working days.⁶

Does a missing ICP stop indexing? Sogou’s webmaster page doesn’t mention ICP filing at all.¹⁴

One Chinese blogger wrote in 2021 that unfiled sites are “basically not indexed” by Sogou and 360.²⁴ That’s one old opinion, with no test behind it.

We found no measurement either way, for Sogou and foreign sites. If you do need the filing route, start with ICP filing vs ICP license.

How to set up Sogou, step by step

Work through these in order. Only the third step has a clock on it.

1. Open the door to the spider. Check that robots.txt and your firewall don’t block Sogou web spider, which is case-sensitive. Sogou labels that string as its PC user agent and lists no mobile one.¹³ Sogou warns that robots.txt changes can take weeks to show.¹⁴
2. Create a Sogou account. The Egg’s 2019 walkthrough shows sign-up by email or mobile number.²⁰ That’s old, so expect the screens to differ. We found no source on whether foreign numbers or IDs are accepted, so don’t assume either way.
3. Add and verify the site. In Site Management, enter the site. Put Sogou’s file in the root folder, or its meta tag in the homepage <head>.⁶ Finish within 6 hours, or start again with a new code.⁶
4. Leave the file or tag in place. Removing it can undo your verified status.⁶ Note this in your site’s handover documents.
5. Submit your key URLs. Paste single page URLs from the selected site, and don’t resubmit the same link. Verified sites also get a bulk form. Sogou says it doesn’t guarantee indexing.⁷

Sites that aren’t verified have a separate form, with a captcha.⁷ Use it if verification stalls.

The sitemap trap

Don’t plan around a sitemap. The link tool refuses sitemap files outright.⁷ A separate sitemap tool exists, but Sogou describes it as invitation-only.⁸

Sogou says invitations generally go to sites with original or irreplaceable content, or sites its spider can’t crawl properly. You can ask by email.⁸

If you get in, the limits are familiar:

• TXT, XML or XML sitemap index
• 50,000 URLs and 10 MB per file, up to 100 files
• UTF-8 for XML, UTF-8 or GBK for TXT
• Files placed in the site’s root folder

Sogou also says a sitemap doesn’t directly affect indexing or ranking.⁸ Its spider moves through hyperlinks, so make sure your key pages link to each other.¹⁶

What Sogou’s own rules say

Sogou asks for plain, crawlable pages with original text. These points come straight from its help pages, which makes them firmer than any agency’s list. The main page is undated and still mentions Flash, so read it as standing guidance, not a recent statement.¹⁴

• Titles: Give each page a title related to its body, use your site or organization name on the homepage, and don’t stuff in unrelated keywords.¹⁴
• Links: Every page should be reachable by at least one text link, and pages shouldn’t carry too many.¹⁴
• Page types: Sogou prefers static pages. On dynamic ones, limit parameters and URL length.¹⁴
• Redirects: Use plain links between pages. The more redirects a page has, the likelier it’s dropped.¹⁴
• Depth: Pages buried too deep may be dropped, especially dynamic ones.¹⁴
• Frames: Use frames and iframes sparingly, because framed content pages may be dropped.¹⁴
• Duplicates: Pages that closely match existing content may not be indexed.¹⁴

Sogou’s mobile whitepaper adds user experience rules. It forbids forced app downloads, and forced login to read main content. It also bans ads between an article’s title and the end of its body.¹⁵

It gives no numeric limit for load time, only asking that it be as short as possible.¹⁵ Page weight still matters to your visitors, so see how to speed up your website in China.

Watch the mirror rule if you run several China domains. A Chinese copy of a page on two domains is the kind of duplication Sogou warns about.

Sogou publishes three penalty levels.¹⁴ A site that has cleaned up can ask for removal, and repeat offenses are punished harder.¹⁴

Which Sogou SEO claims hold up?

Few of them are proven. Agencies repeat these lines, but none of the guides we read shows data behind them, so treat them as opinion.

Sogou’s explainer does name keyword match, position, frequency and link quality among relevance signals.¹⁶ It gives no weights, so it can’t settle how links compare with Baidu.

In practice, write a meta description anyway, since it costs little and other engines can use it. And publish Simplified Chinese, which is what mainland readers expect.

What about Yuanbao and AI search?

There’s a link, but its SEO value isn’t measured. IT Home reported at the launch of Tencent’s Yuanbao assistant in May 2024 that it had connected to WeChat Search and Sogou Search,²⁹ and Yicai described the same link in February 2025.²³

An October 2026 article describes a redesigned Sogou home page with an AI mode that credits Yuanbao search.²² That’s one writer’s observation, and our text reading of the home page didn’t show it.²⁷

Marketing to China says Sogou Baike helps feed Yuanbao’s answers.¹⁷ It gives no source, so don’t treat it as settled.

How to measure Sogou

Use Sogou’s tools if your account can reach them, and your server logs if it can’t.

• Keyword tool: It shows queries, impressions and clicks over up to three months, split by PC and mobile, for the top 20,000 keywords.¹⁰
• Index tool: It shows 30 days of crawled and indexed pages, and refreshes at most once a day.⁹
• Server logs: Filter for Sogou web spider and confirm by reverse DNS, since real spiders resolve to sogou.com hostnames. Sogou publishes no IP list, and says it also supports Web Bot Auth signatures.¹³ Spider visits show that Sogou can reach you, and nothing more.
• Analytics: Watch for visits referred by sogou.com on your Chinese pages.

The bottom line

Sogou is small, measured at 1.72% by StatCounter in October 2026, but cheap to cover once your Chinese pages exist.

Keep the spider unblocked, verify if you can, submit key URLs and follow Sogou’s page rules. Plan as if the qualification step stays out of reach without an ICP, and treat every ranking claim as unproven.
